Encaustic means literally burning in. It comes from a greek term and refers to painting with a mixture of pigmented beeswax and damar resin heated to about 200 degrees. After each layer of encaustic paint is applied, the surface is heated to fuse it to the previous layer thus insuring integrity of the painting.
